Although Atonement clearly marks ‘the return of the author’, one of the strengths of this novel-and its profoundly ethical dimension-is to preserve the place of the reader and to prevent her/him from confusing responsibility and authority. The words of the twins, ‘to whom it may concern’, should be allowed to resonate in the space of the entire story: that there should be no one to answer for the effects of the letter and to secure its destiny is also what prevents us from hindering the play of the text and putting its meaning under lock and key. The ‘ob-scene’ letter nevertheless possesses something which resists interference, appropriation, or destruction-like in The Go-Between or Poe’s famous tale, ‘The Purloined Letter’, where its circulation takes on an allegorical dimension. As for Robbie’s letter, it appears as the ideal pretext to cancel the social exception he constitutes. The message in the bottle which the twins leave for whoever will care to pick it up points to a failure of duty on the part of the adults and exposes a general irresponsibility. Whilst playing a singular part in the story, the message that Robbie sends to Cecilia through Briony is part of a dense epistolary network which Joe Wright’s film throws into sharp relief, thus underscoring the role of address in the novel. The letter that the runaway twins of Atonement address ‘to everyone’ (McEwan) or ‘to whom it may concern’ (Wright) finds its place in the narrative while another, far more explosive letter has started circulating.
